Fabric Sofas vs. Leather Sofas: Which Should You Buy?

Appearance

Leather sofas add a very classic, stylish touch to your home — no one can ignore a snow-white sofa made from quality Italian leather. Fabric sofas, on the other hand, come in countless colors, sizes, and shapes that can be matched to any space you like. So our conclusion is: there's no accounting for taste.

Material Quality

Leather sofas are known to be hypoallergenic. Unlike fabric sofas, leather furniture doesn't collect dust, pet hair, or odors, so if you're allergic to these things, we recommend choosing a leather sofa instead. Leather sofas are fairly easy to maintain — just wipe off the dust and apply a leather conditioner every couple of weeks. And of course, book a skilled professional once a year for a thorough cleaning that will keep your sofa looking great for many years to come.

Budget

Both fabric and leather furniture are made from materials of varying quality. As with anything, there are cheaper materials and more expensive ones. Our recommendation is to check the quality of the material used in the furniture you're planning to buy. Generally speaking, choosing higher-quality materials pays off far more in the long run — a low-quality leather sofa will never hold up over the years the way a quality Italian leather sofa will.

So which should you choose?

Whichever you choose — leather sofas or fabric sofas — both have their pros and cons. It all comes down to your priorities: buy a cheap sofa and replace it every couple of years, or invest a bit more in a higher-quality sofa that will last at least ten years.

Maintenance

In our view, this is the single most important factor to consider if you're about to buy new furniture for your home. If you choose fabric sofas, make sure to pick a stain-repellent fabric, which will make maintenance much easier over the years.

If you choose leather sofas, we recommend sticking to Italian leather in a dark shade — leather sofas are much easier to maintain. All you need to do is wipe off the dust every couple of weeks and apply a special leather conditioner. Leather furniture also won't fade in color the way fabric sofas commonly do.

Summary

Your living room set is the heart of the home — the place where you relax at the end of a long, tiring day, watch TV with the family, and host friends and relatives. Try to choose sofas that are high-quality, comfortable, and easy to maintain.

If you're still torn and not sure what to choose, we'd be happy to advise you anytime.
